The past year was very special indeed for the world of sports, with the London Olympics being the highlight of 2012. Young athletes became unexpected heroes for their respected countries as a new generation of players dominated most of their competitions. But not in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter running events.

Female Kenyan Runner Vivian Cheruiyot proved that her legs can still keep up with her younger opponents as she won the silver and bronze medals for the 5km and 10km running events respectively. Practice was the key for Vivian as the 29 year old competed in various running events all-over the globe to train for the 2012 London Olympics.

The previous year began with a rocky start for Cheruiyot as her spouse was being sued by his ex-wife for escaping parental responsibilities. Vivian married Moses Kirui Kiplagat, a fellow runner, in a traditional Kenyan marriage after Kiplagat's divorce. Moses' ex-wife asked for monetary compensation to support their child, something Kiplagat constantly avoids to pay.

The case of her husband has yet to be settled. Even though she was haunted by personal problems, Vivian kept her focus for the upcoming Olympic Games. Her perseverance and unquestionable dedication for the sport paid off as she won two medals for her country. Vivian's emotions were immeasurable, probably as intense as the feeling of winning at Da.PartyPoker.com.

Vivian capped off the year with a Laureus World Sports Award for Sportwoman of the Year, an award previously won by fellow runner Marion Jones, tennis superstar Serena Williams, Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam and American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. This was also the first Sportwoman of the Year Award for Africa, another addition to Cheruiyot's list of achievements.

Things are going smoothly for Vivian Cheruiyot's way. 2013 will definitely be a big year for Vivian as she celebrates her 30th birthday. Thirty may be an age where athletes begin of thinking about retirement. But not Cheruiyot. She is just starting to peak.

Peter Kirui is set to grace the start of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday, October 21, but it won't be as a pace setter. Kirui, the sixth place finisher over 10,000m at last year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, has made a name for himself as a pacer.

He helped Patrick Makau break the world record (2:03:38) in Berlin last year. His personal record in the marathon is 2:06:31 achieved when he paced Wilson Kipsang last autumn in Frankfurt where he finished sixth. The promising 24-year-old Kenyan is now focusing on his own fast time in Amsterdam at the IAAF Silver Label Road Race.

Kirui has an impressive track record. He not only helped Makau's record setting in Berlin but he also ran the best time that has ever been run at 30 km (1:27:38) in this race. A month later in Frankfurt, winner Kipsang was assisted by Kirui, where the latter achieved the fastest time at the 35km point and went on to finish in 2:06:31.

Kenyan Javelin king Julius Yego is not ready to quit his beloved YouTube despite cracking to the top echelons of his sport at London Olympics.

Yego who made history as the first athlete from Africa to make the Olympics final when he set a continental record of 81.81m in the qualifying rounds will write the next chapter in his bludgeoning career when he competes at the Zurich Diamond League meeting on August 30.

"The organisers have invited me there and although I'm still working on my injured knee, I'm looking forward to the challenge," he told Capital Sport on Tuesday.

"It will be a different experience for me and I hope it will be the first of many such events," the Kenya Police officer who was among the few Team Kenya athletes for London 2012 who emerged with credit from the 30th Olympiad added.

He was alluding to the knee strain he suffered while warming up for the Olympics final that saw him emerge for the medal contest heavily strapped.

"I'm training to be at my best and working towards being close to 100 percent since I can feel the effects but there has been improvement since I arrived from London," Yego who will depart to Switzerland two days prior to one of the DL finales disclosed.

Yego was ranked last among the 12 finalists with a best throw of 77.15m having also recorded 72.59m and 74.08m in his other attempts but there was no shame in propping up the field since he had to smash the pain barrier to fulfil his cherished dream.

After failing to make an impact at the 2012 London Olympics, Kenya's top 800m runners, Pamela Jelimo and Janeth Jepkosgei return on the track at the Thursday's Athletissima 2012 Samsung Diamond League meeting in Lausanne.

Jelimo, the immediate former Olympic champion, failed to recapture the title she won in Beijing four years ago, finishing just outside the medal bracket in 1:57.59 while Jepkosgei, a former world champion finished last in the race 2:00.19.

The two will be battling it against Olympic champion Mariya Savinova and bronze medallist Yekaterina Poistogova both from Russia. Other Kenyans on the provisional list are 3,000m steeplechasers Paul Kipsiele Koech and Richard Mateelong, who failed to make the cut to the London Games. The duo finished outside the top three during the Kenyan trials despite Koech holding the third fastest time of all times of 7:54.31.

London Olympics triple gold medallist and 100m record holder Usain Bolt will be the main attraction in the sprints as he leads Warren Weir, Wallace Spearmon, Churandy Martina and Jason Young in the 200m race. Bolt's countryman and double London Olympics silver medallist Yohan Blake will lead other 100m finallists Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay in their specialty.
